DIY Marine Electrical Self-Inspection

A free, guided checklist to document the condition of your boat's electrical system, section by section, at your own pace. Budget 2 to 4 hours for a thorough first pass, you don't need to finish in one sitting.

Before you start: this self-inspection helps you catch common problems and document the condition of your boat's electrical system. It is a starting point, not a substitute for a professional inspection. If anything here turns up a fault, or if you're not comfortable performing a step safely, stop and contact us or any qualified marine electrician.

Stop using the affected system immediately if you find any of the following, regardless of what section you're in: scorching, soot, or heat discoloration at any connection; melted, bubbled, or fractured wire insulation, wire-nuts, or fuse holders; charred terminals or bus bars with green corrosion; an active burning smell or visible smoke; a breaker that trips immediately on reset or below its rating; wiring that is or was submerged in bilge water; pinched, cut, or scorched shore power cables or receptacles; a bulging, swollen, or overheating battery; black electrical tape covering damaged insulation; or Romex, NM cable, or any other solid-core household wire anywhere in the AC system. Arcing faults can develop with no visible sign until damage is already done, a clean look doesn't rule a connection out. Some of these are simple to remedy yourself, replacing a damaged shore power cord, for example, if you're comfortable doing so. Others, like a breaker that trips below its rating or a submerged wiring run, mean the underlying cause needs a professional look before you use that system again. When in doubt, contact us or any qualified marine electrician.

Safety first: disconnect shore power in sequence (branch breakers, then main AC breaker, then the shore pedestal breaker, then unplug the cord) and open the battery switch(es) before opening any panel or disturbing wiring. Never work on an AC circuit hot, confirm it's dead with a meter first. Wear safety glasses and acid-resistant/nitrile gloves near flooded lead-acid batteries, and keep sparks and open flame away from battery compartments. Never work on an energized system with wet hands or while standing in a wet bilge. If you are unsure at any step, stop, document what you can safely observe, and contact us or any qualified marine electrician.

Tools You'll Need

  • Multimeter, for continuity, voltage, and diode-mode checks.
  • Phone camera, to document connections and fittings.
  • IR camera or FLIR add-on (optional), surfaces hot connections before they show visible damage.
  • Work light or simple test lamp (optional), confirms a circuit is energized without reading a meter.
  • Insulated-handle screwdriver and a non-contact AC voltage tester, for safer panel work.
  • Nitrile or acid-resistant gloves and safety glasses, for battery work.

How Severity Works

For each item, you'll simply mark it Pass, Fail, or Not Inspected. You don't need to judge how serious a problem is yourself, that's already tied to the specific item, so marking something Fail shows you the right severity automatically. Including a Pass, there are four tiers in total:

  • Pass: checked, no issue found.
  • ⚠️ Advisory: a deviation from best practice, not currently dangerous. Worth fixing at a normal service interval, not urgent.
  • Needs Attention: a real ABYC compliance gap or a defect likely to worsen over time. Worth scheduling a professional visit around.
  • 🛑 Urgent: an active safety hazard or something on the stop-and-call list above. Stop using the affected system. Contact us or any qualified marine electrician, if you are comfortable doing so, replace the part immediately.

A fifth state, Not Inspected, isn't a severity level, it just means an item hasn't been checked yet, whether you haven't gotten to it or you're deliberately deferring it (equipment you don't have aboard, for example, use Not Applicable for that instead).

"I don't know" is the worst thing you can say

Insurance companies expect diligence from owners. A detailed written log, photos, and timestamps show that you're a competent owner conducting real diligence. Many claims get denied on subjective grounds like "wear and tear" or "lack of maintenance." An owner with a photographed, documented checklist of repairs more than satisfies the diligence clause found in virtually every policy. Protect your investment.
